The Filmfare Best Music Director Award is given to film composers by the Filmfare magazine as part of its annual Filmfare Awards South for Tamil (Kollywood) films. The award was first given in 1992, A. R. Rahman being the first recipient of this award for his film score and soundtrack of Roja.
There have been only four music directors to have received the award, with A. R. Rahman leading the winners with 12 awards, followed by Harris Jayaraj (5 awards), Bharathwaj (2 awards) and Yuvan Shankar Raja (1 award).
A. R. Rahman is the only composer to have the destinction of winning the award several times in a row (9 times in a row between 1992 and 2000 and twice in a row between 2006 and 2007). Yuvan Shankar Raja happens to be the youngest winner, receiving the award at the age of 25.
